Sacra di San Michele from Turin: tour, train or car?

Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

Stone abbey rising above a wooded Alpine ridge beneath a wide sky

Sacra di San Michele stands on Monte Pirchiriano west of Turin, high above the Susa Valley. The difficult part is not deciding whether the view is worthwhile; it is matching transport with opening hours. A half-day organised tour is simplest, the seasonal train-and-bus connection is economical, and a car gives the most flexibility but still leaves a final walk.

The organised half-day tour

The half-day Sacra di San Michele tour from Turin lasts four to five hours and starts at €60. It removes the connection at Avigliana and keeps the day compact. Choose it if you have limited time, do not want to coordinate seasonal transport or want commentary on the abbey and valley.

The trade-off is a fixed schedule. Confirm the meeting point, language, admission and amount of free time on the booking page. “Half day” does not mean a private transfer, and the route may not suit travellers who want a long hike.

Train and seasonal bus

The abbey’s official information lists a combined train-and-bus connection from Torino Porta Nuova via Avigliana on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 4 April to 31 October 2026. The one-way combined fare is €6.30, and the journey is quoted at roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. Timetables are sparse, so missing a bus matters.

Outside the operating period, the official site suggests a pre-booked taxi from Avigliana. Do not arrive assuming a shuttle runs daily. There is also a Sunday direct bus from Piazza Solferino on selected dates; check the current official timetable before building your day around it.

Driving and the final approach

Driving gives you control over departure time and makes it easier to combine the abbey with Avigliana’s lakes or another Susa Valley stop. Compare car hire in Turin only after checking the rental conditions, parking and weather for your date.

A car does not deliver you to the church door. From the Croce Nera parking area, the official route continues for about 800 metres on foot to the ticket office. The abbey is a steep historic complex with stairs. Visitors with reduced mobility have a separate access arrangement and limited itinerary; contact the site beforehand rather than assuming the standard route works.

Opening hours and a workable plan

From March to October, current hours are Monday to Saturday 09:30–17:30 and Sunday 10:45–17:30. From November to February the site closes at 16:30, with special dates and a winter closure possible. These are operating details, not permanent promises, so verify them on the official Sacra website.

For most first-time visitors, the organised tour is the balanced option: no fragile connection and enough time for the main route. Independent public transport is better value when the seasonal bus operates and you are comfortable planning around a few departures. Drive if the abbey is one stop in a wider Piedmont day, not merely to avoid an 800-metre walk that remains either way.
