Venaria Reale or Stupinigi: which Savoy palace should you visit?

Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

Long Baroque gallery with a patterned stone floor and tall arched windows

Venaria Reale and the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi are both Savoy residences outside central Turin, but they are not interchangeable. Venaria is the larger day out: palace rooms, monumental galleries, formal gardens and the neighbouring La Mandria park. Stupinigi is a more compact hunting lodge whose dramatic central hall and furnished apartments can fit into half a day.

Choose Venaria for scale and gardens

Venaria is about 10 kilometres north of Turin. Its centrepiece is the Galleria Grande, but the visit extends through court apartments, exhibitions and gardens. The official ticket menu separates the palace-and-gardens ticket from broader combinations that include current exhibitions or the Castle of La Mandria, so read what your chosen ticket covers.

The guided Palace of Venaria tour lasts three hours and starts at €145. It suits travellers who want interpretation and a fixed programme; independent admission is the better-value choice if you mainly want the architecture and gardens. The official site advises advance booking and publishes seasonal hours. Monday is normally the closing day, apart from selected holidays.

Public transport is realistic. Metropolitan trains stop at Reggia di Venaria, around 500 metres from the ticket office, while the Venaria Express links central Turin and Porta Susa with the residence. Check the current operator timetable before leaving, especially on holidays.

Choose Stupinigi for a focused half-day

Stupinigi lies south-west of Turin. Filippo Juvarra designed it as a hunting residence, and the plan radiates from the oval central hall. The interiors, furniture and court setting are the point; the historic garden is smaller and has its own seasonal opening; check whether your ticket includes it.

The official standard palace ticket is €12. The lodge is normally open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:30 and at weekends and on holidays until 18:30, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Online presale carries an additional fee, while ordinary individual visits do not require a reservation. Verify exceptional dates before travelling.

From Lingotto station, GTT bus 41 towards Orbassano reaches the Stupinigi area in roughly 20 minutes. From the centre you need a connection, so the journey is less direct than a city museum but still possible without a car.

Can you visit both in one day?

Technically yes, but it is a poor first choice. The residences sit on opposite sides of Turin, and public transport normally brings you back through the city. Combining them turns a day of architecture into a timetable exercise and leaves little room for Venaria’s gardens.

Visit Venaria alone if you want the grander experience, gardens or a full day outside the centre. Choose Stupinigi if you have half a day, prefer furnished interiors or are staying near Lingotto. If Savoy history is central to your trip, place them on separate days and add the royal palaces category rather than rushing both.

Neither residence needs a rental car. It becomes useful only if you are continuing to smaller Piedmont sites on the same day; in that case, compare Turin car hire after checking the day’s parking and access conditions.
